This 1978 Port Ellen 31-year-old was a limited edition of 3000 bottles from a mix of ex-bourbon and refill sherry casks and is regarded by many as one of the late highlights of the series. At its natural cask strength of 54.6%, this is a whisky of astonishing power and complexity, with a huge weight in the mouth and generous sweet and sour citrus fruit, green apples, wet sand, oyster shells and brine.
