A bottle of Macallan’s 1851 Inspiration Speyside single malt whisky. This was bottled around 2010, several years after the first 1851 edition had appeared and was the last iteration of the highly controversial Macallan Replica series.
Macallan 1851 Inspiration was one of several Macallan Replica bottles issued in the first few years of the new millennium that recreated the contents of several supposedly ancient bottles of Macallan bought by the distillery. Other replicas in the series were based on bottles purportedly from the 1841, 1861, 1874 and 1876 vintages.
There was only one problem - the bottles that Macallan had bought were clever fakes made in Italy in the 1980s and 1990s. Macallan, however, refused to accept their dubious nature for several years despite a clamour of misgivings from collectors and prominent whisky writers. Fortunately, the quality of whisky used to make the fakes was pretty convincing and the recreations of these whiskies are now sought after by both collectors and drinkers alike.
