A mystery Speyside single malt whisky, Darkness 8-year-old spends most of its maturation in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred for a finishing period into specially made 64-litre Oloroso sherry octave casks.
These miniature sherry octaves provide more intense wood interaction due to the increased surface ratio, so the finishing period, although brief, imparts a deep colour and rich Oloroso flavours to the whisky, which is bottled at 47.8% without artificial colouring or chill-filtration.
